U.S. hits EU, Canada and Mexico with steel, aluminum tariffs

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Thursday said it was moving ahead with tariffs on aluminum and steel imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union, ending a two-month exemption and potentially setting the stage for a trade war with some of America’s top allies.

U.S Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross told reporters on a telephone briefing that a 25 percent tariff on steel imports and a 10 percent tariff on aluminum imports from the EU, Canada and Mexico would go into effect at midnight (0400 GMT on Friday).

“We look forward to continued negotiations, both with Canada and Mexico on the one hand, and with the European Commission on the other hand, because there are other issues that we also need to get resolved,” he said.]]Ross offered little detail about what the EU, Canada and Mexico could do to have the tariffs lifted.

"You're About To Get Dropped": Bodycam Footage Shows Moments Leading To The Viral Arrest Of A Beachgoer In New Jersey

Police in New Jersey have released three bodycam videos showing the violent confrontation between officers and a 20-year-old woman during her arrest at a beach.

Police released bodycam footage on Wednesday showing the events surrounding the disturbing arrest of a 20-year-old woman that went viral, after an officer was seen pummeling her head at a beach in New Jersey.

The Wildwood Police Department is conducting an internal investigation following a viral video that captured Emily Weinman's arrest at Wildwood beach last weekend.

Weinman, who is from Philadelphia, was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated assault by spitting bodily fluids at an officer, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstruction, and minor in possession of alcohol.
The officers involved in her arrest were reassigned to administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
Footage of her arrest went viral after Weinman posted the video on social media, saying that one of the cops "tackled me to the ground and smashed my head into the sand" after she refused to give her last name for a citation.
Weinman said she was at the beach with her friend, her 18-month-old daughter, and her daughter's father, when the officers approached her after suspecting her of underage drinking.
Wildwood Police Chief Robert Regalbuto said that while he found the video to be "alarming," he did not "want to rush to any judgement" until the results of the investigation were out.

The first bodycam video released by police shows the moments leading up to Weinman's arrest, when she was given an alcohol breath test, which she appeared to have passed.

Weinman can be heard telling the officers to "mind your own business" and that she hadn't drunk any alcohol, while the officers argued that the alcohol was on "open display" and that she could be charged with "possession."
In a statement issued along with the bodycam videos, Regalbuto said that during the initial encounter, the officer "can be heard stating that he was just going to have Ms. Weinman pour the alcohol out, without issuing any violations and then he terminates the recording."
"You're allowed to carry alcohol," Weinman is heard telling the officers in the video. "You can see it, but we're not drinking it."
After she refuses to give her last name to the officer who is writing up the citation, he tells her, "you're not cooperating."
"I didn't disrespect you," Weinman says. "I didn't do anything to get written up."
She then accuses the officers of getting "mad because you thought we were drinking."
The officers tell her that she is "causing a scene."

"Ok that's it, I'm done with you," an officer is heard telling Weinman after she repeatedly refuses to give them her last name for the citation.

"Do you have cuffs on you?" one of the officers asks another. Weinman is then seen walking away from the police while screaming, "Don't fucking touch me."

"You're about to get dropped," one of the cops tells Weinman, who then appears to shove him before the body camera goes off.

Police said that Weinman "forcibly struck" the officer in the torso where the body camera was placed, causing it to turn off.

The second bodycam video shows the struggle between the officers and Weinman, who is seen spitting at one of the officers while they attempt to handcuff her.

A third video shows the physical altercation between the police and Weinman, during which she can be heard saying, "They're choking me. I cannot breathe."

"I'm not choking you," the officer responds. "The fuck you are, you fucking dickhead," Weinman says.

One of the officers can then be seen punching Weinman's head, as she starts crying. "I'm a woman... You're not allowed to hit me and choke me like that," Weinman tells them.

"Get off me," Weinman is heard screaming at the officers. "My daughter is right there seeing this."
In her now-deleted Facebook post, Weinman said that the cop "head locked" her by putting his arm around her neck, and then punched her "in my head."
"Then he head locked me again but this time choking me, I was gasping for [air]. Yes, i know I should’ve gave him my name.. I was partly wrong in a way but I was scared," she wrote in the post.
In a statement released to media outlets, Weinman's attorney, Stephen Dicht, said there was "nothing to support" the police's claim that Weinman spat on them.
He said the videos showed the officer pulling Weinman's hair, "depriving her of oxygen and forcibly striking her."

"You white piece of fucking trash," Weinman is heard telling the officer. "I didn't do anything wrong. I wasn't drinking."

While being escorted to the police vehicle, Weinman tells the officers, "Now we got these fucking young cops who don’t know how to treat people."
Later, one of the officers can be heard arguing with the father of Weinman's daughter, who accuses the cop of punching her in the face.
"Yeah, well, she tried kicking us," the officer tells him.
One of the officers involved in the confrontation is then heard describing the incident to other cops. He tells them he had to stop Weinman for "underage drinking" and that she wouldn't give him her last name.
"I said, 'If you're not going to give me your information, you're going to be locked up,'" the officer says. "She tried walking away from me. I tried grabbing her and she tried kicking at us. So I slammed her on the ground. She kicked him. And then I hit her a couple of times and then I put her in cuffs."

Weinman's attorney said that the videos show how the officers "overreacted to a situation which had no elements of violence or the need for anyone to be taken into custody."

"The officers then exercised poor judgement, likely due to poor training and poor supervision and exacerbated a situation where hundreds, if not thousands of people were on the beach, enjoying a sunny day," Dicht said in his statement.
Urging the police to drop all charges against his client, Dicht said, "We have no choice but to vigorously defend each and every charge."
Dicht did not respond to BuzzFeed News' request for comment.

Samantha Bee apologizes for 'inappropriate' Ivanka Trump comment but will not be fired by TBS, despite backlash

Just days after Roseanne Barr’s show was canceled because of a racist tweet she posted, comedian Samantha Bee was in jeopardy of losing her show due to an off-color comment she made — or at least that’s what some people on the internet petitioned. The outrage, however, didn’t work.
Full Frontal host Samantha Bee took some heat for her harsh commentary Wednesday night about first daughter Ivanka Trump. During a segment regarding the United States’ current practice of separating immigrant children from their parents this week, Bee referenced Trump and called her the nastiest of words.
“You know, Ivanka,” the host said, looking into the camera, “that’s a beautiful photo of you and your child, but let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dad’s immigration practices you feckless c***!”
Bee has since apologized for her remark, tweeting: “I would like to sincerely apologize to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night. It was inappropriate and inexcusable. I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it.”
TBS also released a statement, telling Yahoo Entertainment, “Samantha Bee has taken the right action in apologizing for the vile and inappropriate language she used about Ivanka Trump last night. Those words should not have been aired.  It was our mistake too, and we regret it.”
While many likened Bee’s C word comment to Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet about former Obama aid Valerie Jarrett, the end result was not the same. Bee kept her show and her job, despite a slew of conservative critics demanding that Bee suffer the same fate as Barr.
The White House even demanded that TBS take harsh action against their host. In a statement, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said,  “the language used by Samantha Bee last night is vile and vicious. The collective silence by the left and its media allies is appalling. Her disgusting comments and show are not fit for broadcast, and executives at Time Warner and TBS must demonstrate that such explicit profanity about female members of this administration will not be condoned on its network.”
Several notable conservative leaders also chimed in, including Megyn Kelly of NBC’s Today show and former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain.

John Goodman Breaks Silence After Roseanne Barr Controversy (Exclusive)

The celebrated actor said he's 'fine' and said he was content that he wouldn't be up for consideration for an Emmy for his role on 'Roseanne.'
John Goodman is opening up about the cancellation of Roseanne, but the celebrated actor is being cautious about his comments regarding the controversy.
In recent footage obtained by ET, Goodman was at an auto repair shop in New Orleans where he was collecting his car after repairs. The actor was reluctant to address the drama, explaining that he would "rather say nothing than to cause more trouble."
However, the 65-year-old actor -- who played Roseanne Barr's on-screen husband, Dan Conner, on the ABC sitcom -- assured fans that he's doing OK amid the controversy, sharing, "Everything's fine."
The actor also seemed pretty content with ABC deciding to suspend its Emmys For Your Consideration campaign for the show’s recent 10th season, which means that none of the cast or creators would likely see any love from this year's Emmy Awards.
"I wasn't gonna get an Emmy anyway," Goodman said, shrugging. "I've been up there [11] times already, and if I didn't get one I'm not gonna get one."
Goodman was nominated for 11 Emmys between 1988 and 2010 -- six of which were for his role on Roseanne. Goodman did take home one Emmy in 2007 for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his role on the short-lived series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.
The sitcom also earned the veteran TV star five Golden Globe nominations, of which he won once, in 1993.
Goodman said he hasn't been following the news of the developing controversy regarding Roseanne, stating, "I don't know anything about it. I don't read it."
That includes rumors and speculation that the show could possibly continue in the future in the form of a spin-off, if Barr's titular character was written off, and the focus was shifted to Goodman's character. The actor said of the rumors, "Then you've heard more than I have."
The long, contentious drama between Barr and ABC began early Tuesday morning when the 65-year-old actress posted a racist tweet regarding former White House adviser Valerie Jarrett, which she then deleted.
Later Tuesday morning, ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey released a statement announcing that the network had cancelled Roseanne in response to the outrage surrounding Barr's remark. ABC subsequently removed all references to the revival series on its press site and Viacom pulled all re-runs of the sitcom's entire runfrom all of its channels.
Barr declared that she was going to leave Twitter on Tuesday morning, only to return in the evening with a late-night tweet storm that blamed her original offending tweet on Ambien, and then called out several of her co-stars for throwing her "under the bus."

MormonLeaks: LDS Church owns at least $32B in U.S. stock market

(KUTV) — The LDS Church has U.S. stock market holdings valued of at least $32 billion according to information gathered from an independent website.
The church — officially titled The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — does not not publish the details of its finances, but the website MormonLeaks.io released information it says connects the church to 13 LLC companies that collectively owned the stocks at the end of 2017 and provides the collective value at $ 32,769,914,000. One of the financial reports was from 2015.
MormonLeaks wrote that each of the 13 companies have domains that are hosted by the LDS Church servers, that also hosts LDS.org and Mormon.org. "All of them were registered on July 21, 2016," according to MormonLeaks, that also provided a more technical explanation. It claimed there is little doubt the LLC domains are owned the church.
The information is taken -- MormonLeakes wrote Wednesday -- from forms required by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for investment managers to deal with sums over $100 million. Those forms require business managers to be listed and MormonLeakes said that it attempted to contact all the managers of the LLCs, spoke to three of the 13 and one confirmed she was the business manager of the respective LLC. MormonLeaks said two men denied their connection to the respective LLC. That manager that confirmed the connection told MormonLeaks she could not answer if the LLC was owned by the Mormon Church.
MormonLinks provided the names of the 13 LLC companies:
  • Ashmore Wealth Management LLT, valued at $1,918,532,000.00
  • Argyll Research LLC, valued at $446,327,000.00
  • Clifton Park Capital Management, LLC, valued at $880,518,000.00
  • Cortland Advisers LLC, valued at 2,177,742,000.00

  • Tiverton Asset Management LLC, valued at $1,598,252,000.00
  • Tyers Asset Management, valued at $2,855,436,000.00
The companies have a combined value of $32,769,914,000.00.
It also provided a spreadsheet, available HERE in over 400 pages, or downloadable from this page of MormonLeaks, that lists the total value of the shares owned by the companies at the time of their most recent year-end filing.
MormonLeaks is a non-profit media organization that says it collects and publishes information about the LDS Church and says it seeks greater transparency from it. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the LDS Church has not disclosed its finances since 1959. According to an article by the LDS Church owned Deseret News, the church donates about $40 million annually to humanitarian causes. The church claimed approximately 16 million members in 2017. Members are required to pay 10 percent of their income to the church to remain in good standing.
2News has reached out to the LDS Church for comment.
On May 22, the LDS Church released information pertaining to church finances.
According to the release, "The vast majority of Church operations are funded through the sacred tithes and offerings given by members."
The LDS Church states that only "a small portion of funds comes from businesses maintained by the Church."

Trump weighs in on Roseanne: Where's my apology from ABC?

President Trump on Wednesday responded to ABC’s firing of Roseanne Barr over a tweet that made a racist slur against former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett. And, true to form, the president made it about him.
“Bob Iger of ABC called Valerie Jarrett to let her know that ‘ABC does not tolerate comments like those’ made by Roseanne Barr,” Trump tweeted, referring to Disney chief Iger. “Gee, he never called President Donald J. Trump to apologize for the HORRIBLE statements made and said about me on ABC. Maybe I just didn’t get the call?”
It’s unclear what statements Trump was referring to. His tweet came less than a day after White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the president was too busy to comment on Barr.
In another tweet, Barr called billionaire Democratic donor and a Holocaust survivor George Soros “a Nazi” who “turned in his fellow Jews 2 be murdered in concentration camps & stole their wealth.” Discredited conspiracy theories portraying Soros — who is Jewish and was 9 years old when World War II began — as a Nazi collaborator have become right-wing internet staples.
Barr later apologized for her tweet about Jarrett, suggesting the sleep aid Ambien was to blame. The president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., retweeted two of Barr’s tweets about Soros, including the false “Nazi” claim.
ABC had been praised by critics for bringing back “Roseanne” — a show that featured a Trump supporter as its lead character.
The president, who took credit for the successful reboot and even called Barr to congratulate her, did not mention her firing at his rally in Nashville Tuesday night.
On Air Force One en route to the speech, Sanders told reporters that Trump was too focused on his upcoming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to comment on the show’s cancellation.
“That’s not what the president is looking at,” Sanders said. “That’s not what he’s spending his time on. And I think that we have a lot bigger things going on in the country right now, certainly, that the president is spending his time on.”

ABC Has Canceled "Roseanne" After Her Racist Tweet About Valerie Jarrett

ABC on Tuesday made the decision to cancel its Roseanne revival after the star's racist tweet comparing former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett to an ape.
ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey called Barr's comment "abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with our values."
"We have decided to cancel her show," said Dungey.
In a tweet posted on Tuesday morning, Barr said the black senior adviser to President Obama was the "baby" of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood political party and Planet of the Apes.
The tweet came in response to a conspiracy-laden thread alleging Jarrett had helped cover up CIA spying.
After her racist remark drew criticism on Twitter, Barr defended her statement.
"It's a joke," she wrote in response to a CNN reporter.
"Muslims r NOT a race," she said in response to another user.
She later tweeted an apology to Jarrett. "I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me-my joke was in bad taste," she wrote.
Comedian Wanda Sykes, who had worked as a consulting producer on the show, had already announced she would not be returning after Barr's tweet. A source close to Sykes denied a report that she demanded that ABC cancel the show.
Roseanne's debut in March was the highest rated comedy on any network in four years, with an audience of 18.4 million and a 5.2 in the advertiser-coveted 18 to 49 demographic. ABC quickly renewed it for a 13-episode second season. As the nine episodes aired, the show's ratings ebbed (10.6 million viewers and a 2.5 in the demo), but Roseanne still finished as the No. 1 show on television.
Barr was once known for her leftwing views, which played out on the show during its original run. The character of Roseanne Conner was a factory-organizing feminist, and the show represented the concerns of a Midwest, working class family that rarely caught a break. Its anti-racist, pro-LGBT politics reflected Barr's politics, who in 2012 ran for president on the Green Party ticket.
But on Twitter, Barr started to express another side of her beliefs. She began tweeting anti-Muslim, pro-Zionist views, and retweeting far-right conspiracy theories, most infamously #Pizzagate, which implicated Hillary Clinton and her campaign chair John Podesta in a pedophiliac trafficking ring. She also revealed herself to be a pro-Donald Trump activist, to the surprise of some of her fans.
ABC announced the show's revival in May 2017, and said it would reflect American political divisions after Trump's election. Later in the year, Barr's adult children took control of her Twitter feed, deleted her past tweets, and changed her password, she said during a press conference in January.
Barr, however, regained control over her Twitter feed before the show's premiere, and recommenced giving a voice to pro-Trump views, and the fringe conspiracy theory known as "The Storm" or QAnon. She refers to it constantly, in tweets and retweets.

Justin Timberlake delivered a gift to a victim of this month's deadly school shooting in Texas in a surprise hospital visit that brought a smile to the young girl's face.
Timberlake, who was in the Houston area as a part of his Man of the Woods world tour, surprised Sarah Salazar in her hospital room in eastern Texas, her mother wrote in a Facebook post Friday, just one week after Sarah was wounded in a mass shooting.
Sarah was among those injured at Santa Fe High School when a former student opened fire on two art classrooms, killing 10 and wounding 13, police said.

Sarah's mother, Sonia Lopez-Puentes, shared an image of her daughter with the pop star in her hospital room on Friday, showing Timberlake smiling and crouching at her bedside.
Lopez-Puentes thanked him and other special visitors, including Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, in a separate post on Saturday.
"JJ Watt, Justin Timberlake ... school officials, board members, teachers, fellow classmates, friends and family have taken time to visit Sarah this week showing their love and support bringing smiles to her beautiful face," she wrote, adding that her daughter appeared to be "making progress."

Timberlake acknowledged the shooting during his show at the Toyota Center in Houston on Wednesday and dedicated his performance of "Until the End of the Time" to those killed.
"Let those angels hear you up there," he said to the singing crowd. "We're gonna light the whole arena, this whole city up for Santa Fe High School."
Salazar sustained multiple injuries in the May 18 shooting, including a broken jaw, fractured rib bones and a shattered shoulder, according to a GoFundMe page set up on her mother’s behalf. The GoFundMe campaign had raised about $21,000 in donations as of Tuesday morning, a little more than one-third of its fundraising goal. The alleged gunman, 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, was charged with capital murder in the wake of the shooting. Police said he was armed with a shotgun and a .38-caliber revolver, both of which were legally owned by his father.
Police have yet to declare a motive. Pagourtzis is currently being held at the Galveston County Jail, where he's under suicide watch.
