Linda W, from the German city of Pulsnitz was arrested last summer in Mosul by Iraqi security forces.
The 17-year-old German ISIS sniper Linda W. from Pulsnitz was sentenced by an Iraqi court this Sunday to a six-year prison sentence. Under the decision Linda will spend 1 year in prison for illegally entering Iraq and 5 years for being a part of ISIS. As Linda is legally a minor the trial was without a public hearing and was before a juvenile court in Baghdad. German officials from the embassy in Baghdad were present during the trial and observed the proceedings.
Linda W. was arrested by Iraqi security forces in the city of Mosul on July 2017 and then transferred to Baghdad for sentencing. The case had made headlines worldwide as Linda was a key sniper in Mosul city for ISIS. Linda told several German news outlets that she wanted to return to Germany as soon as possible and that she regretted having joined the terrorist organization but few believed her statements after comments she made about her family.

Her crimes were accounted for but many Iraqis have called for harsher sentencing of foreigners who come to Iraq to kill Iraqis. Unlike local ISIS fighters which are sometimes forced to join or risk being killed by ISIS, foreign fighters make a decision to come to Iraq and wilfully join and fight. Many thousand Iraqi civilians were killed by suicide bombings and attacks by ISIS, especially foreign fighters and the Iraqi public demands justice. No country has asked Iraq to return foreign fighters thus far and all have worked with Iraq to convict them under Iraqi law.
