British marathon runner collapses in 30C heat just over a mile from the finish line - then has to watch his Australian rival claim Commonwealth gold amid anger at medical response

  • A British runner collapsed just over a mile from the finish line on his way to a gold medal win at the Commonwealth Games.
    Callum Hawkins was leading the men's marathon when he became delirious in the 30C heat and fell in the last 1km of the race. 
    The Scottish athlete lay helpless on the ground waiting for medical staff and had to watch an Australian opponent run past him to victory.

    Hawkins fell to the ground a second time with the barrier just ahead of Sundale Bridge in Southport.
    Onlookers watched and took photos as the struggling athlete attempted to pull himself to his feet to continue the race, but failed.  
    In a heartwrenching moment, the Scot watched Australian opponent Michael Shelley run past him and claim gold.

    Commonwealth Games viewers commented on the lack of help that was offered to the Scottish athlete. 
    'Australian public and tourists deciding to film Callum Hawkins on the floor instead of jumping over the barrier to try and help him, should be ashamed,' one person posted on Twitter.
    Another user questioned where the medical assistance was on the track. 
    'The guy was in danger of a severe head injury, where was the medical assistance? Not good enough!'

     Team Scotland wrote on social media that Hawkins had been taken to hospital for monitoring, but medical staff had 'no major concerns' about his condition.
    The Australian gold medallist, who is based in the Gold Coast, said he did not believe any athlete could prepares for the conditions on Sunday and he too was struggling with the heat. 
    The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games said in a statement there were no major concerns for the athlete. 
    CEO Mark Peters said the every assistance possible was being offered to Callum and Team Scotland.
    Mr Peters said he was concerned about the reaction to the struggling athlete. 
    'I was also concerned about the behaviour of a small number of bystanders who chose to take images,' he said.
