Sheriff: Teen arrested for making threats towards school, AR-15 found in home

MANISTEE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A 17-year-old Wellston teen is facing terrorism charges after investigators say he threatened to shoot up a school.
The Manistee County Sheriff's Office was called to Brethren High School after receiving a threat complaint on Monday.
According to deputies, students emailed school officials telling them Cullen Shafer, 17, made threats toward the school. School officials alerted law enforcement.
Deputies went to Shafer's home where he was interviewed and they say he admitted to making the statements, but said he was just joking.
Shafer was arrested and taken to the Manistee County Jail on a $100,000 cash/surety bond.
Investigators say an AR-15 and the Shafer's cell phone were confiscated from his home.

This AR-15 was found in the home of the suspect

Shafer is facing a charge of making terrorist threats -- MCL 750.543M.
The case has been turned over to the Manistee County Prosecutors Office for review.
There could be additional charges. Right now deputies are not sure who the gun belonged to; in Michigan rifles do not have to be registered.
Shafer was arraigned around 4 p.m. Tuesday. He will appear in court for his probable cause hearing Feb. 27.
