Black Panther Is a Box-Office Machine That Keeps Breaking Records

Marvel’s Black Panther has been a box office sensation since premiering in February, smashing multiple records to set a new precedent for superhero movies. The story of T’Challah returning to Wakanda to fight for his claim to the throne has resonated with viewers for weeks, leading the box office for the longest consecutive run and out-earning other Marvel movies.
Here are a number of records Black Panther has broken since coming to theaters.

Black Panther dethroned The Avengers as the highest-grossing superhero movie

Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther earned yet another milestone over the weekend by becoming the highest grossing superhero film ever in North America, with $631 million in domestic ticket sales. The sales total surpasses 2012’s The Avengers, previously the highest grossing superhero movie, which earned $623 million. Black Panther also becomes the fifth highest-grossing movie of all time, beating out Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Black Panther had the longest consecutive run at the top of the box office of all superhero movies

Black Panther led the box office for five weeks in a row, taking the longest consecutive run at the top out of all superhero movies, according to Box Office Mojo. It’s the first film to lead the box office for five weeks in a row since Avatar ran at the top for seven straight weeks in 2010.

Black Panther had the biggest February premiere

The film earned $201.8 million domestically over the course of its opening weekend in February, becoming the highest-grossing February release ever. Black Panther out-earned the previous record holder, Deadpool, which took in $132 million over its opening weekend in 2016.

Black Panther is the highest-grossing film by a black director

Black Panther quickly earned the most money in North American than any other film by a black director, according to Fandango. It beat out Straight Outta Compton, which earned about $200 million globally, as the top-grossing film by a black director with a predominantly black cast.

Black Panther is the most tweeted about film

The Marvel movie became the most tweeted about film of all time this month. According to Twitter, Black Panther was mentioned on the platform more than 35 million times, surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which previously held the first and second place records.
