From Meghan Markle’s fairy-tale-inspired Givenchy gown to the couple’s first kiss on the steps of St. George’s Chapel, the royal wedding was a tearjerking affair, to say the least.
But you might not want to put away your tissues just yet.
Prince William reportedly went so far as to leave a spare seat beside him in the chapel in memory of his and Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana. It was widely speculated that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also left a spare seat to honor her on their own wedding day in April 2011.
But it’s not the only way in which Princess Diana has been remembered.
Markle’s spring bouquet featured her favorite flowers, forget-me-nots, among scented sweet peas and sprigs of myrtle. Princess Diana’s sister, Lady Jane Fellowes, also gave a touching reading at the ceremony.
“My beloved speaks and says to me: ‘Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away; for now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone,'” Fellowes told those at St. George’s Chapel, reading an excerpt from the Song of Solomon.
“Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is as strong as death, passion fierce as the grave,” she continued.
